It has been an exciting summer for Athletic Club who made several high profile signings to strengthen the squad. Yuri Berchiche became the club’s second most expensive transfer when he joined from PSG, but his arrival will see Mikel Balenziaga play fewer minutes this season. Balenziaga recently spoke to the media and said that he is happy to be at the club and will work hard to convince the manager.

“I’m facing the season the exact same way I have the last five years. I have always said that every player has to do everything possible during the week to be able to play. In the last five years I’ve been lucky enough to play many games and I will work to keep that the same. I have not considered leaving and we have never discussed it. This is Athletic and the club always wants to have the best players. What I have always wanted is to play for Athletic and here I am. I am very happy to be here and I will try to contribute as much as I can like I always have. The coach will decide, but I have always worked hard in every training session and in each match and that is my goal again this season.”

Looking forward to the beginning of the season, Balenziaga believes that the team is in good form and that the players have adapted well to the new manager’s system. The important thing is taking three points off of Leganés to start the year and the 30-year-old says that Athletic will win if they play their best football.”

“We are in good form. The sensations are very good and we are happy with what the coach wants. He wants us to have the ball as much as possible and press high to steal the ball quickly and create chances. We want to dominate games. The coach asks us all to be aggressive and to run a lot. I think we are adapting well to what the coach wants and we are seeing positive things ahead of our first league match. We want to leave the past behind us but we learned a lot from finishing sixteenth. We play at home against Leganés in the first game of the league and it is important that we start well. I think that by playing our best and continuing with our preseason level we will be able to get three points.”

Athletic will be without Iago Herrerín for Monday’s La Liga opener due to a muscle injury and Iñigo Martinez is also excepted to miss the game as he has yet to return to training. That being said, Eduardo Berizzo will still be able to field a very strong lineup that, on paper, should be able to earn a victory at the San Mamés. After weeks of preparation, the real work is about to begin.
