Mikel Oyarzabal Reportedly Rejects Athletic Club, Will Continue At Real Sociedad
After seeing Kepa Arrizabalaga leave with Chelsea having paid his €80 million release clause Athletic Club found themselves with a treasure trove of money. The Lions did not want to sit quietly and were determined to use at least part of the sum in order to strengthen Eduardo Berizzo’s team. They turned their attention back to Mikel Oyarzabal, but have had their offers spurned.
Reports quickly revealed that Athletic had already contacted Oyarzabal’s father and were willing to pay his release clause and offer a 5 year contract that would see the 21-year-old make €5 million per season. It was certainly a lucrative deal and Real Sociedad acted fast in hopes of retaining their starlet. President Jokin Apperibay met with the player on Monday and a decision has already been made.
According to a report from Radio Marca Bilbao, Oyarzabal has rejected the offer from Athletic and will sign an improved contract with Real Sociedad. His current deal was set to expire in 2022 and now that will be lengthened by a few more years. His wages and release clause will also be raised.
Some sources in Bilbao have reported that Athletic never made an official offer to the player and things should be clarified in Thursday when President Josu Urrutia is scheduled to give a press conference. He is expected to touch on the Oyarzabal subject, as well as give his thoughts on the departure of Kepa Arrizabalaga. Whatever was happening behind closed doors, Mikel Oyarzabal will not be coming to the San Mamés so the Lions will have to look elsewhere if they want to spend some of their new money.
