It has been a long and interesting summer at Athletic Club with new manager Eduardo Berizzo bringing hope and expectations back to the San Mamés. When the preseason began he called up seven players from Lezama and, although that number has dwindled, a handful have been able to convince the coach to keep them in the first team. Berizzo made it official after Sunday’s friendly win over Augsburg.

The manager revealed that Peru Nolaskoain, Oihan Sancet, and Gorka Guruzeta will all stay in the first team this season. That being said, he also recognizes their need to play regular minutes and stated that they will spend time with Bilbao Athletic when they aren’t needed in the senior squad. This will allow the trio to continue developing, while also being available to Berizzo.

“The departure of Kepa has left us with one less player but I am comfortable training with a lot of people. I prefer to have many and choose the best option, so my idea is to have a lot available. Peru, Sancet, and Guruzeta will all stay in the first team and train with us. When they are not called on to play they will be with Bilbao Athletic, but it is clear that they have real options with the first team.”

Being able to train with the first team on a regular basis throughout the season will be a great opportunity for their development. In the meantime, the manager seems to have made it clear that there will be no other transfers out other than Asier Villalibre returning to Bilbao Athletic and Andoni López leaving on loan. Berizzo is confident in his team and ready to start the La Liga season at the San Mamés
