Iñigo Vicente Determined To Prove Himself At Bilbao Athletic Despite Loan Offers From The Segunda
It wasn’t a surprise when Iñigo Vicente was called up to train with the first team this summer. The 20-year-old had shattered several Lezama scoring records and had played a vital role in Gaizka Garitano’s Bilbao Athletic team the previous season. While competing in friendlies with the senior squad the forward was able to show his well-rounded abilities so it was a surprise when Berizzo sent him back to the reserve team during the first round of squad cuts.
Vicente had performed well enough that many, including the player, believed that he could really be competing for a place in the squad. When he was sent back to Bilbao Athletic he refused to hang his head and determined that he was going to fight for his place at the San Mamés in hopes of joining the team as soon as possible. Since returning to the reserves he has scored three preseason goals and is playing inspired football.
According to a report from Pako Ruiz of DEIA, several clubs from the Segunda have already contacted Athletic with hopes of signing the 20-year-old on loan. However, both the player and Athletic have rejected the offers, preferring the player to stay at Bilbao Athletic. Staying at Lezama will allow him to prove himself at home while also being available to Berizzo if the need arose.
Vicente understands just how important this season will be for his career. He’s currently under contract through 2020 with an €8 million release clause, so he is ready to prove himself worthy of a place in the first team. He recently revealed a new Lion tattoo on his shoulder and is focused on achieving of dream. The forward is destined to play at the San Mamés and his goal is to make that a reality as quickly as possible.
