Kepa Arrizabalaga Pens Goodbye Letter To Athletic Club And Fans
Athletic fans are still reeling after seeing goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga leave the club to join Chelsea. The English side paid the player’s €80 million release clause, making him the most expensive goalkeeper in history, and leaving the Lions without one of their best players. After being officially presented as a Chelsea player on Wednesday, Kepa penned a goodbye letter to Athletic and the fans which was posted on social media.
Today is the day I leave home, Athletic. It’s a day of mixed feelings because I’m leaving the club where I began at 9 years old, where I grew up as a person and as a footballer. I have made this decision with tranquility and resiliency. It was not easy for me to leave everything for which I have worked so hard for many years, put in so much effort, lived so many experiences, and had so much dedication to fulfill the dreams of a child. However, sometimes as a professional footballer you have to take steps forward and face personal challenges to continue developing your career. I understand that some fans will understand my decision and others will not. I have analyzed what is best for me and, for that reason, I consider that the opportunity that was presented to me by Chelsea is the best decision for my future. That does not mean that I will forget that values of Athletic, the same ones that I have been cultivating for the past five years.
For this, I have words of thanks to the club and to the fans. I want to thank Athletic for the love, for the respect, for the values that they have instilled in me during all these years and that I will always take with me. To all my teammates that I have had during all these years, but especially to those that I am leaving today. They are the best ones. To all of the employees who, in the background, make the club better. And finally, thanks to all the fans. Every time I have stepped on the San Mamés I have felt privileged and I have noticed your love and strength. I will always be in debt to what you have made me feel.
Thank you and until the end. Aupa Athletic
