If the exit of Kepa Arrizabalaga left Athletic in a difficult position, Iago Herrerín training injury on Thursday has made things even worse. The Lions are set to play friendlies against Hannover 96 and Augsburg over the weekend and Alex Remiro is the only first team goalkeeper available. Manager Eduardo Berizzo has had to turn his attention to the reserves.

Thursday afternoon Athletic announced the squad that will travel to Germany for the friendlies and there were two new names added to the list. Berizzo has called up both Bilbao Athletic goalkeepers – Hodei Oleaga and Unai Etxebarria. The pair are set to battle for the starting role in Gaizka Garitano’s squad but will now have the chance to earn valuable experience over the weekend.

The move is necessary as Remiro cannot be expected to play both friendlies and the team needs backup options in case of injury or other unforeseen issues. Oleaga had already been training with the first team while Kepa was still on summer vacation, but this will be a new experience for Etxebarria. In the meantime, Garitano will likely have to look to CD Basconia for goalkeeping help as Bilbao Athletic are also scheduled to play a friendly this weekend against Tudelano.
