Iturraspe “I Don’t Know Why Kepa Left, But We Trust Herrerín And Remiro”
Kepa Arrizabalaga shocked Athletic fans when he made the decision to accept Chelsea’s offer to join the London-based club. His exit left the Lions without one of their most important players, but also with €80 million that can be used to strengthen the team. Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Ander Iturraspe admitted that ht doesn’t understand why the 23-year-old left the San Mamés, but is confident with the goalkeepers in place.
“It’s a shame. He’s a very important player, but there are two goalkeepers who can have more prominence. We completely trust Iago and Remiro. They are two great goalkeepers, plus Simón who just renewed and was loaned to Elche has great potential. I wish him all the best and all the luck in the world. I’ve been here 20 years and I’ve know Kepa all my live. I’ve played with my brother and I don’t know why he left. Everyone has their own priorities. Some leave and others stay and Athletic continues to have good seasons. We put Athletic above all else. There is no name bigger than Athletic.”
A los has already been said about the fact that Athletic will now have €80 million to spend and fans seem to have several ideas about which players the team should target. Iturraspe said that topic isn’t something he is qualified to discuss, but does believe that there is already a lot of quality in the team and that the goal is still to qualify for Europe this season.
“I understand that getting €80 million as part of the operation is good, but we are about the personal not about the money. I don’t know if we can sign anyone, thats for others to decide. I don’t know, but the team has a lot of competition. Clearly, Europe is the goal that we are still pushing for. We want to be back there, as in recent years. My future? I have one year left on my contract and there is no option or desire to leave. I am solely focused on Athletic. There is competition in the team and that is important. We can push each other every day to be better and that is a good thing.”
With Kepa having left the club, all eyes will turn to Iago Herrerín and Alex Remiro. The pair are ready for their chance to step up and battle for the starting role at the San Mamés. At the same time, Remiro is currently entering the final year of his contract so reaching an agreement on an extension now becomes the top priority for Athletic Club moving forward.
