Chelsea Will Reportedly Sign Athletic Goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga On Wednesday
The last 24 hours have been a whirlwind for Athletic fans after reports surfaced claiming that Chelsea wanted to sign Kepa Arrizabalaga. The London-based club are expected to lose Thibaut Courtois to Real Madrid in the coming hours and identified the Basque as their ideal replacement. Although fans have been holding their breath in hopes of good news, it appears as though the deal will happen.
Chelsea contacted Kepa early Tuesday morning to make it clear that they were willing to pay his €80 million release clause. They also made a contract offer to the 23-year-old who was left with 24 hours to make a decision. According to a breaking report from Juanma Velasco of Marca, Chelsea will pay the release clause on Wednesday and Kepa will travel to London to complete the deal.
The deal has not been confirmed or made official at this point, but reports suggest that it will go through. If Kepa does leave Athletic the club will look to Iago Herrerín and Alex Remiro to battle for the starting goalkeeper role this season. Remiro has long been in Kepa’s shadow and has proven that he is ready to test himself in La Liga.
