Capa “I Just Arrived And It Feels Like I’ve Been Here For Two Or Three Years Now”
Ander Capa spent two years at Lezama as a child, but made a name for himself at Eibar. This summer he returned to Athletic and can’t be happier with how things are going to this point. In a recent interview he admitted that he feels like he’s been here forever and is thankful to have a chance to compete for a place in Eduardo Berizzo’s team this season.
“I have been very happy and content with my teammates from the first day. They have all treated me very well, as a person and as a player. I just arrived and it feels like I’ve been here for two or three years now. The fact that the coach is also new puts me on equal terms with everybody else. Everyone has to earn his trust to have a role in the team.”
Capa went on to highlight the fact that there is a lot of competition in the team. At this point he really isn’t thinking about his place in the starting lineup, but rather just playing his best every day in hopes of earning regular minutes. In the end, he believes that the competition is good for everyone because players are pushed to get better at each training session.
“There is good competition in the team when it comes to training every day. I am not really thinking about the starting lineup at this point. My goal, like always, is to give my best version and I know I will have minutes. You can’t be thinking ahead because every game, every day of training, every week is different. You have to do your best then it is up to the coach to decide. It is great that there is so much competition because we come to Lezama every day with the goal is improving and getting better.”
In closing, the right-back was asked his opinion on Athletic’s new manager, Eduardo Berizzo. Capa was quick to point out that the coach has a very aggressive style of pressing high up the pitch which the players enjoy. The fans are excited about the team this year, but there are also added expectations under Toto.
“What I like the most about the coach is that he is very aggressive when it comes to pressing. He wants us to go up to steal the ball and not shrink back. He wants us up close to our opponent’s goal. His way of defending is similar to what we used at Eibar under Mendilibar. The fans are happy with the coach and with the new signings, so the expectations are high.”
Ander Capa has shown the ability to play in Berizzo’s system, utilizing his strength and attacking prowess at right-back. However, Oscar De Marcos is also competing for the starting role which gives Athletic two great options. It will be up to the manager to make the best decision about this position, and others, but there is no denying that this is one of the deepest Athletic squads in recent memory.
