Referee Appointment Sparks Controversy Ahead Of The Basque Cup Final
All eyes are on Saturday’s Basque Cup Final between Athletic Club and Real Sociedad. After a disappointing first installment of the match last year, the Basque Federation is hoping for a great game this time around and seeing the two biggest clubs facing off is definitely an added benefit. Although this is still technically a preseason friendly it is being taken very seriously and there is now added controversy.
On Friday the referee for the match was officially announced and it has already brought drama. The head official will be Aitor Gorostegui Fernández who currently oversees game in the second division, but has a connection to Real Sociedad. He was born and raised in Donosti and was once a card-carrying Socio of La Real before pursuing a career as a football referee.
The hope is that Saturday’s match will be played and officiated without any drama, and it will definitely be watched closely. Gorostegui is very close to being promoted to the first division as last year acted as the fourth official during a match between Real Madrid and Barcelona. Most recently he was in charge of the promotional playoff tie between Real Zaragoza and Numancia. He is a well respected referee in Spain’s Segunda but his background does raise eyebrows ahead of the Basque Cup Final.
