Iñaki Williams “My Aim This Year Is To Score More Goals”
The arrival of Eduardo Berizzo has brought plenty of excitement to Athletic Club and the players feel it. Iñaki Williams took the time to speak to the media on Thursday and was quick to point out that the team looks very good under the new coach. He says that Berizzo is pushing the team hard, but that it will lead to success.
“The team is good. There is a new coach and everyone is doing well, we all give a little bit more and want to be starters. I think we will have a very exciting and very good year. We are all trying to be better every day and bring our best. We’ve been working hard and giving our best. When training is over we are tired, but satisfied. There are some teammates I have yet to play with yet, but the summer is for us to strengthen the coach’s ideas. There is a lot of enthusiasm.”
Turning his attention to himself, Iñaki says that Berizzo has helped him learn some new concepts in training this summer. Whether playing on the wing or as a striker the 24-year-old knows what is being asked of him and he hopes to score more goals than ever this season.
“I’m learning a lot. I have had very good coaches and I think I’ve gotten better every year. Berizzo has been helping me in training with some new ideas. I can play anywhere in attack and adapt myself to any position. The coach has told me that he wants to use my versatility and mobility. I have a lot of imperfections but there is a solution – train more. I’m a forward and that means that I’m asked to score goals, set up goals, and become the best player I can be. My aim this year is to score more goals.”
Every player recognizes the disappointment of last season. Iñaki stated that he believes everyone could have worked harder, but now the focus is on the upcoming campaign. As expected, the team wants to finish in the top six and return to European competition next year.
“We are the first ones who want to turn around the situation from last year. We were all able to give more, from the goalkeepers to the forwards, but now we focus on this season. We are Athletic Club and we’ll keep on suffering and working hard to achieve new goals this year. Our aim is to finish as high in the table as possible. We have a coach who is going to help and it’s going to be a good year. We want to be in Europe again and with Athletic nothing is impossible. Our goal is to be in the top six.”
In closing, the forward touched on this Saturday’s Basque Cup Final against Real Sociedad. Although it is technically a friendly, the Lions want to win and show that they fully grasp Berizzo’s style of pressing and attacking football.
We are going to try to win Saturday. We can’t forget that it is still the preseason, but we are facing the game the best way possible. The coach demands a lot from us and we push ourselves to the limit. He wants us to attack, to possess the ball which is a great weapon. Whoever the opponent is, we are going to try to steal the ball in your area and run over you.”
The ultimate goal for this season is to qualify for Europe and make a strong run at the Copa del Rey. Berizzo has brought hope and expectations back to the San Mamés, but the Lions will be looking to take it one game at a time. Their La Liga season will officially begin on 20 August at the San Mamés against Leganés so every day is vitally important to getting the team ready for what will hopefully be a successful campaign.
