Unai Simón is excited about his loan move to Elche (Elche)

Unai Simón is the latest talented goalkeeper to come through Lezama and he looks to have a very bright future. After two solid years starting for Bilbao Athletic he put pen to paper on a first team deal this summer that runs through 2023. Since then he has been loaned to Elche in the Segunda where he will have the chance to player regular minutes. During his presentation he stated that he believes Elche is the perfect place for him to continue developing.

“Jorge Cordero explained the project to me and I thought it was very good. I think Elche is a club where I can grow personally. José Juan is a very good goalkeeper. Working with him is going to help me a lot because you can learn a lot from a veteran goalkeeper. I came here to learn as much as possible.”

Simón also said that Gianluigi Buffon is his idol and the player that he tries to model his game after. The 21-year-old wants to be complete in every aspect of the game and that is what he is striving to accomplish.

“I believe that going on loan is a way to progress personally. Being loaned helps you develop. My reference point is Gianluigi Buffon. I think he’s a very complete goalkeeper. That is what I’m looking to be – complete in all aspects. I don’t want to be an 8 in most things, I want to be a 10 in everything. Buffon is an idol to me.”

This will be a big year for Simón who will now have the opportunity to face stronger competition than he is used to. If all goes well he could return to Athletic next summer ready to battle for a place in the first team. For the time being, however, the most important thing is for the Lezama product to make the most of this opportunity and focus on improving every single day.
