Several Clubs Have Contacted Athletic With Interest In Signing Iñigo Lekue On Loan
The Athletic Club squad has an overbooking in several positions and that is a good problem to have. So far this summer Eduardo Berizzo has been testing new ideas, but seems to be set on the fact that Oscar De Marcos and Ander Capa are his right-backs of choice. This leaves Iñigo Lekue in a difficult place and the 25-year-old could be set to leave the club on loan.
Lekue has only participated in three friendlies this preseason and did not feature at all in the Traditions Cup in Germany over the weekend. It is already clear that the Lezama product will struggle to play regular minutes this season so a move away may be the best thing for his career at this point. According to a report from Pako Ruiz of DEIA there are already several clubs who have contacted Athletic.
Real Valladolid, Girona, Leganés, and Levante have all reportedly shown interest in the right-back with hopes of strengthening their squads this summer. All four would be able to offer Lekue the chance to compete for a starting role, which would be the goal of a loan move. Recently relegated Deportivo is also said to have made an offer for the player, but Lekue is not interested is spending the year in the Segunda.
Berizzo has already stated that he has an idea of which players will be cut and things should become clearer this weekend with Athletic playing against Real Sociedad in the Basque Cup final on Saturday and then having two friendlies in Germany on Sunday. If Lekue does not feature it would be a significant sign that he is not part of the manager’s plans for this season.
