Andoni López Signs Contract Extension With Athletic Club Through 2021
It has been a busy and exciting summer for Andoni López. The Lezama product has been one of the most promising young talents to come through Athletic’s system over the last few years and new manager Eduardo Berizzo rewarded him with a chance to fight for a place in the first team this preseason. A switch to center-back has been the big story surrounding the 22-year-old, but the most important thing is that his future is now tied to the Basque giants.
On Wednesday Athletic Club officially announced that Andoni López has signed a contract renewal through 2021. His previous deal was set to expire next summer and the Lions were keen to secure his future at the San Mamés. The club believes that the defender can develop into an important player so finalizing an agreement was a major priority this summer.
Now that López’s contract has been extended the club can finally make a firm decision on what to do with him this season. Initially he was expected to join Numancia on loan in the Segunda but an injury to Iñigo Martinez saw him transition to center-back and begin battling for a role in the first team. However, sources claim that Peru Nolaskoain is more likely to earn a place under Berizzo which means that López could still be heading away on loan at some point this summer.
Wherever López plays this season the most important thing is for the 22-year-old to be able to enjoy regular minutes. He has shown a lot of promise and potential so his development is still the top goal at this point. There is still a chance that he could convince Berizzo to keep him in the team which will be something to keep a close eye on over the next few weeks. It has been a highly successful transfer window for Athletic and, with clubs like Real Sociedad and Eibar watching him closely, reaching an agreement on a contract renewal is another massive victory for the Lions.
