Eduardo Berizzo Abandons Double Training Sessions With A Focus On Giving Players More Rest
It has been an intense preseason for Athletic Club under new manager Eduardo Berizzo. The Argentine has led the team through double training sessions almost every day, but fatigue was evident in their trip to Holland which saw the Basques lose two friendlies and draw 1-1 with Duisburg. Since then Berizzo has vehemently stated that the team will be better when the players have had the time to rest, which seems to have come quickly.
After returning from Holland Berizzo gave the team the day off on Monday as a way to rest and recuperate from a long trip. Through Friday there will only be one training session each day which could only be temporary, but it may also be a permanent change. The coaching staff has now had the time to install their system and there may not be a need for double sessions anymore at this point.
The Lions will then be in action on Saturday when they will face off with rivals Real Sociedad in the Basque Cup Final. The following day the team will travel to Germany to participate in a friendly tournament against Mainz and Fiorentina. It may be a busy end to the week, but the training sessions won’t be as intense with the players getting more time to rest and recover now.
Athletic’s La Liga season will officially begin in exactly three weeks on 20 August at the San Mamés against Leganés. Eduardo Berizzo is now putting the finishing touches on his team and will also need to cut a few more players in order to get down to the 25-man squad that he wants to utilize this year. There is still plenty of work to do to get ready for the new campaign, but there is excitement and expectation surrounding this Athletic Club team.
