Berizzo “We Have Developed Everything We Wanted In Training”

Eduardo Berizzo learned a lot from Athletic’s trip to Holland (AC)

Athletic have returned from their week-long training trip in Holland and manager Eduardo Berizzo has decided to give the players a day off in order to rest and recuperate. Speaking with Juanma Velasco of Marcahe said that fatigue has played a part in recent mistakes that have been made in friendly matches. The manager is confident that the team will be at their best when they have more time to rest.

“I’ve given the squad a bit of a break because after so many training sessions it will be good for them to not see me for a few hours. The trip was good for us and left us with some certainties and some concerns. We have been able to score goals easily, but we’ve felt weak defensively. It’s true that I attribute that to physical issues and fatigue because these weeks we’ve been having double sessions with hardly any rest.”

Berizzo also highlighted the fact that the team has had to adapt to a new coach, but having two training sessions most days has allowed everyone to grow closer together. He says that the staff have accomplished everything they wanted to do up until this point and now is the time to start focusing on finding rhythm in a starting lineup.

“The team has a new coach and they have to know him, trust him, and listen to his ideas. In the human aspect, seeing each other every day and training twice a day has brought us closer. We have developed everything we wanted in training. For the next matches there will not be a lot of changes and many players will approach a full 90 minutes, which is something that also helps the team grow.”

Athletic Club will be back in action on 4 August when they will be facing Real Sociedad in the Basque Cup final. This may technically be a friendly, but both teams have had this game marked on their calendars since it was announced. With Athletic’s La Liga season starting on 20 August at the San Mamés every day of training is now more important than ever.
