Unai López is ready to play an important role at Athletic Club this season. His loan spell with Rayo Vallecano was a major success last season and now the midfielder wants to prove that he can do it in the Primera. After the team participated in the Traditions Cup on Saturday López told reporters that he isn’t the same teenager that debuted with the first team back in 2014.

“I’m no longer the child that debuted with the first team at 18 years old. I matured outside of Bilbao. I’m happy that things are going well for me now, but even more so for the performances of the team. This team is not characterized by individual talent, but by our ability to play as a team.”

López went on to say that he really likes the system that Eduardo Berizzo has brought to the team because he is able to play the kind of football that he enjoyed. Things may not have gone well for the team at the Traditions Cup, but the midfielder said that the players are just suffering from fatigue after training so intensely for three weeks now.

“I like what the coach asks of me because I like playing that kind of game. It’s true that he demands a lot of rhythm and you can’t neglect even the smallest things because it could hurt the team. Things didn’t go well in Duisburg, but we must bear in mind that we have been going without rest since the start of the preseason. We’ve noticed that in matches and, in the end, we have declined a bit. I think this is a great team with very good players.”

Now that Athletic’s training trip to Holland is over, all of the attention will turn Real Sociedad. The Lions will be facing off with their rivals in the Basque Cup Final on 4 August and, although it is technically a friendly match, there won’t be anything friendly about it. The La Liga season will start on 20 August for Athletic so every day of training is vitally important at this point in the summer.
