Gorka Guruzeta looks to have earned his place in the first team (AC)

When the preseason began a few weeks ago new manager Eduardo Berizzo had called up seven players from the youth system to train with the senior squad. At first it didn’t look as though any would actually be able to stay in the first team, but as time passed that narrative began to change. Four of the seven are still training under the Argentine and it appears as though one has earned his place in the squad.

Gorka Guruzeta is an exciting prospect, and with good reason. He led Bilbao Athletic in scoring last year with 18 goals and has shown the ability to play anywhere across the attacking line. Although he hasn’t spent any time at striker under Berizzo, he has performed well as a winger and has enjoyed plenty of minutes in the preseason friendlies so far. Despite being only 21 years old he’s looked strong alongside the other first team players and seems to have earned Berizzo’s trust. On more than one occasion Toto has praised his versatility and eye for goal.

While the other youth players that were called up have only featured sporadically, Guruzeta has been a constant presence. He’s been treated as a first team player this summer and that is definitely something worth noting. Whether in training sessions or in friendlies the forward has been playing a major role and has performed at a high level. The ultimate decision will still be up to Berizzo, but as things stand right now Gorka Guruzeta appears to have earned his place in the first team.
