Espanyol And Real Valladolid Are Interested In Signing Mikel Balenziaga If He Leaves Athletic Club
Mikel Balenziaga has been the unrivaled starter at left-back since returning to Athletic Club in 2013. Over that time he’s been one of the most consistent players in the team, but injuries last season saw his form dip a bit. This summer Athletic made headlines by signing Yuri Berchiche from PSG, who many view as the best Basque left-back in football, and now Balenziaga’s place in the team is in question.
According to a report from Juanma Mallo of El Correo, several clubs have already made it clear that they would like to sign Balenziaga if Eduardo Berizzo decides that he isn’t part of his plans. Espanyol and Real Valladolid are the two most hopeful teams at this point, but there are others from the Primera as well.
On Saturday Athletic participated in the Traditions Cup to bring their training trip to Holland to a close. Berizzo told reporters that he already has an idea of which players will be cut, but that he will take the time to make the right decisions. Balenziaga hasn’t looked his best in the preseason friendlies he’s played in, but it will be up to the manager to make the ultimate decision. If the 30-year-old is made available there will be plenty of suitors vying for his services.
