More Clubs Join The Race To Sign Athletic’s Unai Simón, But Elche Still Lead The Way
Unai Simón has not featured in either of Athletic Club’s friendlies this summer and was left out of the squad that traveled to train in Holland. After signing a contract extension through 2023 the goalkeeper is set to leave on loan somewhere in the Segunda and the Basques are working hard to get a deal done. Several clubs have stepped up with interest in the 21-year-old and now a few more have joined the race.
According to a report from Alfonso Herrán of AS, Numancia and Extremadura have also reached out to Athletic to express their interest in signing Simón. Until this point Elche, Malaga, and Deportivo have been the three clubs in contention to land the goalkeeper but there have been some changes over the past few days.
Deportivo are expected to sign Barcelona’s Adrián Ortolá, which would effectively end their pursuit of Simón. At the same time, Munir El Kajoui has signed with Malaga which lessens their need for a goalkeeper. Numancia already have a few options at the position which likely means that they wouldn’t be able to guarantee a starting role for Simón. As things stand, Elche continue to be in the best position to sign the starlet, but Extremadura are also pushing for a deal.
All clubs interested are hoping to sign Simón as quickly as possible, and Athletic wants the same thing. However, the Lions have reportedly asked for all of the player’s wages to be paid by whichever club takes him on loan, which presents a problem. Clubs like Elche have already said that due to their financial restrictions it would be difficult to sign Simón and that is why a deal hasn’t been reached. Athletic are expected to make some progress in negotiations over the next few days as they seek to find the best situation for Simón and a club that will be able to guarantee minutes.
