Iñigo Martinez Continues Recovery At Lezama In Hopes Of Joining The Team As Soon As Possible
Iñigo Martinez was not able to travel with his teammates to Holland due to the fact that he is still nursing a Grade II calf strain. The injury normally sidelines a football anywhere from 3-6 weeks, but the defender is working hard to return even sooner. It has only been 11 days since the diagnosis was given and Martinez is already taking steps in the right direction.
While the team is training in Holland Martinez is home to continue recovery. On Tuesday he was seen at Lezama walking around with physical therapist Xabi Clemente. There is still no timetable on when the 27-year-old is expected to be able to return to training, but the fact that he is already walking on the field is a good sign. He is hoping to make a comeback before the start of the La Liga season which is scheduled to begin on 18 August.
Without Martinez available the manager has had to work on different options at left center-back. The decision has already been made to allow Xabi Etxeita to leave the club and the attention has turned to Andoni López and Peru Nolaskoain. Both players have been called up from Bilbao Athletic and Berizzo has been transitioning them to play as central defenders. Only time will tell if they will stay with the first team this season, but the ultimate goal is to get Iñigo Martinez back as quickly as possible.
