Eduardo Berizzo Will Reportedly Make Final Roster Cuts After Trip To Holland
Athletic Club are currently enjoying their second day of a week-long training trip in Holland. Eduardo Berizzo called up a total of 29 players for the excursion, leaving behind Iñigo Martinez who is still nursing a calf injury. Trip trip will not only serve to help the team keep preparing for the upcoming season, it will also allow the manager to make final decisions about the squad.
According to a report from Juanma Mallo of El Correo, Berizzo will make the final roster cuts once the trip comes to an end. The manager is said to want a squad of 25 players which means five Lions will be dropped for the upcoming season.
There are already a few names who look to have one foot out of the door. Mikel Rico, despite having a great season last year, appears to be set to leave the San Mamés with former club Huesca interested in his services. Likewise, Huesca are also interested in Alex Remiro and Berizzo will likely drop one keeper out of the current three in the squad. Asier Villalibre isn’t expected to earn a place in the first team and is expected to return to Bilbao Athletic.
Meanwhile, there are still some players who are battling for places in the team. Andoni López and Peru Nolaskoain have both transitioned to center-back this summer and seem to be competing for one roster spot with Xabi Etxeita on the way out. Players like Sabin Merino, Iñigo Lekue, Mikel Balenziaga, Gorka Guruzeta, and Oihan Sancet are also hoping to convince the manager to keep them in the squad. Training in Holland might seem like an enjoyable trip for the team, but every player will be analyzed closely as Berizzo has some difficult decisions to make.
