Financial Issues Holding Up Elche’s Pursuit Of Unai Simón
Unai Simón is still waiting to find out where he will be playing next season. The 21-year-old recently extended his contract with Athletic through 2023 and is now set to go on loan to the Segunda to continue his development and start competing for his place in the first team. Several clubs from the second division have asked about the goalkeeper and Elche seem to be leading race.
Elche Sporting Director, Jorge Cordero, recently stated in an press conference that the club would love to sign Simón and went as far to say that the player and Athletic want the move to happen as well. However, he admitted that there are some issues that are standing in the way, namely the fact that Elche have one of the smallest wage budgets in the Segunda.
“We have maintained contacts with Athletic, but the issue is on hold. It is complicated because the player just renewed. I know that the player would like to play for Elche and that Athletic would do everything for him to play here, but we also have other conditions that we have not figured out. He is an international and has just signed a contract extension with the first team. Our budget is one of the lowest in the Segunda, although sometimes we have to work out situations. I hope that Unai can come, but if he cannot there will always be another goalkeeper who can.”
Athletic are looking to send Simón somewhere that would allow him to be a starter and play regular minutes in the second division. So far it seems as though Elche have made the strongest push to sign the 21-year-old, but economic reasons could create a big problem. It is definitely possible that the two clubs could come to an agreement, but if not there are plenty of other suitors who would love to sign Simón on loan this year.
