Berchiche “I Love Athletic’s Philosophy”
Yuri Berchiche’s arrival at Athletic this summer was a massive move. The left-back had originally spent two years at Lezama before embarking on a different journey that saw him playing with PSG last season before making the return to Athletic a few weeks ago. He recently gave an interview with Media Base Sport, his agency, and explained the path he took to come back to the San Mamés.
“I began at Antiguoko. It is a humble club, very close, where many players have come from like Aritz Aduriz, who is now my teammate. I joined Lezama but I didn’t have a mature head and had to leave to find it. In Eibar we achieved two historical promotions then I started my career in the Segunda. My time at Real Sociedad was important for me to become the player I am today. Then I passed through PSG and it was an unforgettable year. We won many titles and I played with people who are now world stars and could win the Ballon d’Or.”
Berchiche went on to say that he and his new wife are very happy in Bilbao and have great friends in the city. He stated that he loves Athletic’s unique philosophy, especially in a era where football is ruled by money, and wishes that more clubs would do things the same was as the Basques.
“My wife and I have landed in a wonderful city where we have made great friends. It’s all very good. Nowadays all the teams with the television money are reinforcing their teams very well, but I love Athletic’s philosophy. I wish that every team did the same. We have set high goals this year, to qualify for the Champions League or Europa League. We want to be up there competing with the best every year and we hope to have a well-rounded season. On a personal level, I want to bring the experience I’ve gained from other great clubs and help my teammates have a wonderful year.”
Yuri Berchiche became Athletic’s second most expensive transfer signing in history, right behind Iñigo Martinez who joined in January. Both defenders played for Real Sociedad together for several years and are now looking to achieve great things with the Lions. New manager Eduardo Berizzo has brought hope and excitement back to the San Mamés and fans are looking forward to competing for a place in Europe this season.
