Eduardo Berizzo praised his team’s rhythm in their 3-0 win over Amorebieta (AC)

Athletic Club played their first preseason friendly of the summer on Thursday in what turned out to be a 3-0 victory over Amorebieta. Unai López, Peru Nolaskoain, and Oihan Sancet scored the goals for the Lions and afterwards manager Eduardo Berizzo said that his team played with a lot of rhythm despite using so many players throughout the match.

“There are good feelings, especially considering that we played with a lot of rhythm. I’m very satisfied with the great effort from the team and the performance. Today we took the first steps toward the future and we have to keep growing. It is premature to draw conclusions from today, but everyone who participated was involved. Everyone tried to play with the idea of what we want and that is the positive thing from this game.”

Berizzo went on to say that his goal was to get everyone the chance to play, knowing that it would be dangerous for someone to feature throughout the whole match. He praised the young stars for their performances and hard work, saying that they are integrating well into the team.

“My goal was to give everyone minutes. It is a risk for a player to go a full 90 minutes so we wanted everyone to get around 45. Despite the fatigue everyone played well. We are working very hard and everyone has been involved and committed. The team is assimilating well. The young players are very good. They add value to the team and little by little they are adapting to the speed of the Primera. We are happy with them. They are calm and have integrated well into the team.”

It was a great start to the summer for Athletic Club (AC)

In closing, the manager had words of praise for Amorebieta who currently compete in the same league as Bilbao Athletic. The Lions will face another Segunda B club on Sunday in Barakaldo, and Berizzo stated that the player rotation will look very similar during that friendly as well.

“Amorebieta has been a difficult opponent, typical of the football that is played in their division. Now we have another game on Sunday against Barakaldo and it will be much like this one. I want to wait until we have played both games before making the list of who will come to Holland.”

After Sunday’s friendly Athletic Club will be heading to Holland to start their preseason training trip that will run from 23 July through 29 July. Berizzo revealed that he will not finalize the list of players who will travel with the team until after the game against Barakaldo. Regardless, the Lions put in a great performance against Amorebieta and there is reason to be excited with how the team played under the guidance of the new manager.
