Eduardo Berizzo will take the time to assess the entire squad before making any decisions regarding roster moves. Everyone will have the chance to compete for their place in the team, but there are already a few who are moving closer to the exit door. Midfielder Mikel Vesga already left the club a few weeks ago to join Leganés on loan and Mikel Rico could be the next player out.

The 33-year-old is entering the final year of his contract with Athletic and, despite having a strong year last season, his time at the San Mamés looks to be coming to a close. Berizzo has yet to make a decision about his place in the team, but all signs point to an eventual exit unless the midfielder is able to convince the coaches that he should be kept in the team. Luckily, he already has a suitor.

Huesca will be playing in the Primera for the first time in club history and would love to bring back Mikel Rico who played for the team earlier in his career. In fact, they tried to sign him last summer but then-manager Kuko Ziganda made the decision to keep him in the squad. After securing their place in La Liga last year Huesca made their interest known to Athletic and are still waiting patiently to see how things will play out.

Rico’s future at Athletic will be decided by Berizzo who is working to put together the best team possible. There is no denying the leadership that the 33-year-old has displayed at the San Mamés and his security in midfield last season was vitally important. Still, his age and expiring contract could see him make an exit, but Toto will give him the chance to compete for his place before having the final word. For Huesca it’s a waiting game at this point and they are hoping that it turns out in their favor.
