Previewing Amorebieta Vs Athletic Club
With nearly two weeks of preseason training in the books, Athletic will finally take the field on Thursday for their first friendly of the summer. The Lions will be facing off with local Basque club, Amorebieta, in what will serve as an opening test for Eduardo Berizzo’s team. The manager has called up 23 players for the match, choosing to leave behind several of the cornerstones of the team.
With this being the first game of the summer it is impossible to tell what the starting lineup will look like or who will feature the most. What we do know is that Berizzo has made it clear that every player will have the chance to fight for their place in the team. That likely means that almost everyone called up should see some minutes at Urritxe.
Berizzo stated in his first press conference that he plans on using his customary 4-3-3 lineup, with various tweaks in the midfield, and training sessions to this point have confirmed just that. In this friendly fans will be looking forward to seeing which midfielders are paired together and how the attack functions under the new style brought in by Toto. The team has been working a lot on implementing the playing style over the last couple of days and it will be exciting to see how it looks so far.
Playing against a team from the Segunda B comes with the expectation of a victory, but even more important will be seeing that the players as a whole are already grasping the new system. Scoring a lot of goals will certainly be nice and doing so with a cohesive unit playing collective football will be even better. Still, this is only the first friendly of the summer so it is unlikely that either side will play with extreme intensity right now. Also of note, the game will be using VAR as will Athletic’s next friendly which will take place on Sunday against Barakaldo.
