Deportivo Denies Making An Offer To Sign Athletic’s Unai Simón
Now that Unai Simón has penned a new contract with Athletic Club, the next step is finding somewhere for him to play on loan for the upcoming season. The 21-year-old has proven that he is ready to take the next step in his career and many teams in the Segunda are said to be interested in signing the goalkeeper this summer. So far three names have come to light, but one is staying tight-lipped.
Over the past few days Elche, Deportivo, and Malaga have all been linked with moves for Simón. All three clubs are in need of strengthening their keeper position so the signing would make sense. Elche are said to have already contacted Athletic, as have several other clubs, but Deportivo have denied that they have made any offer for the Lezama product at this point.
In a recent interview Deportivo Sporting Director, Carmelo del Pozo, admitted that the club is looking to sign a new goalkeeper. However, he also said that there has been no offer submitted to Athletic. When asked about interest in Simón, Pozo stated that “He is a goalkeeper that is on the market” but wouldn’t comment any further.
The goal of sending Simón on loan is to allow the keeper to test himself against stronger competition and continue his development in the Segunda. With that in mind, Athletic will be looking to strike a deal with a club that can guarantee playing time and the chance to be a starter. At this point the Lions are analyzing offers from interested teams and are hoping to reach a deal before the squad leaves for their preseason trip to Holland on 23 July.
