There will be a big change in La Liga this season with the introduction of VAR, or Video Assistant Referee. After its usage in the World Cup fans have had mixed emotions about implementing the system, but the decision has been made and the transition is taking place. This summer will see several clubs testing VAR during preseason friendly matches so that referees can get practice using the system and prepare for the upcoming campaign.

Three of Athletic Club’s friendly matches this summer will use VAR technology for testing purposes. The first two fixtures, which will take place against Amorebieta and Barakaldo this week, as well as the Basque Cup final against Real Sociedad on 4 August are the scheduled games. These are also the only friendlies the Lions will play against other clubs from Spain which has a lot to do with it as well.

Over the last few weeks Athletic have been posting videos on social media to explain how VAR will work. Initially it will be used much the same way as in the World Cup. VAR will allow referees to review goals, offsides, penalties, and red cards. The goal is to not let the new system interfere with the game, but rather to better help the accuracy of football. There are many different opinions on implementing VAR in La Liga and the hope is that it works out for the good of everyone.
