Unai Simón is expected to leave on loan before Athletic’s trip to Holland (AS)

One of Athletic’s top priorities this summer was the renewal of Unai Simón. The goalkeeper has spent the last two years as the starter for Bilbao Athletic and has shown the potential to become a great player at the San Mamés. With his contract expiring next summer, an agreement was reached on Friday which saw the 21-year-old sign an extension through 2023. Now that a new deal is in place, the next step is finding the best place for Simón to play on loan this season.

The Lezama graduate has proven that he is ready to compete in the Segunda and he has already received interest from almost every club in the second division. Athletic’s plan has been to send the goalkeeper away on loan, but were unwilling to begin the process until the renewal was finalized. The process of analyzing offers has now begun with Simón penning his new contract.

Although many clubs are reportedly interested in the goalkeeper, specific names did not start coming out until this weekend. Newly promoted Elche was the first club linked with a move, but two more have now joined the race. According to a report from Javier Beltran of AS, Deportivo and Malaga are also hoping to sign Simón on loan. The most important thing to Athletic and the player is guaranteed minutes. His development is absolutely vital and the club will look to send him to whichever club can give him the most playing time this season.

In the meantime, Simón is currently training with the first team where he is gaining valuable experience. The team will be leaving for a training trip to Holland on 23 July and the goal is to send the 21-year-old out on loan before that date. Once Simón makes his exit, Eduardo Berizzo will be left with three goalkeepers. Kepa Arrizabalaga is the established started and the new manager plans on Iago Herrerín continuing as the backup. Alex Remiro remains the big question mark as the two sides are having trouble coming to an agreement on a contract extension which needs to happen before the 23-year-old leaves on loan.
