Unai Simón Signs Contract Renewal With Athletic Club Through 2023
Unai Simón is one of the jewels of Lezama and the 21-year-old goalkeeper has now committed his future to Athletic Club. The Lions announced on Friday that Simón has signed a contract renewal that will last through 2023. His previous deal was set to expire next summer so reaching an agreement was a priority this for the club who believe that the youth product has the potential to become an important player in the future.
Simón joined Lezama in 2010 when he was just 13 years old and has always stood out as one of the best young keepers in the country. He has featured for Spain’s U19 and U21 teams and spent the last two years as the starter for Bilbao Athletic where he played in over 60 matches. He is currently spending his second preseason training with the first team, although he will not stay in the squad for the upcoming season.
Due to stiff competition in the first team, and the need for continued development, Simón will play in the Segunda this season on loan. Athletic have already received interest from several clubs in the second division and the Lions are currently analyzing the offers. The goal is to find somewhere that will guarantee the keeper regular minutes, preferably a starting role, so Athletic will be patient as they weigh up the options. The most important thing was to finalize Simón’s renewal. Now that he has put pen to paper on a new deal Athletic can work towards making a decision of where he will play on loan this year.
