Mikel Vesga “There Is No Better Place Than Leganés To Continue Growing”
Mikel Vesga has left Athletic Club on loan and was officially presented on Friday as the newest Leganés signing. With a contract in place through 2021, the hope is that the midfielder will continue his development and return to the San Mamés next summer ready to compete for his place in the team. While speaking to the press, the 25-year-old admitted that there were several factors in his decision to accept Leganés’ offer.
“Last season was a difficult year for me and Leganés were the first ones interested in signing me. They put a lot of effort into bringing me here and, after a difficult year, I needed to them to trust me. There is no better place than Leganés to continue growing. Many Athletic players have come here and played very well. All of the players who have come here have had great things to say. I’ve spoken to Herrerín, Bustinza, and Eraso and the truth is that they helped me make the decision to come here.”
Vesga went on to describe his style of football, saying that he can adapt to anywhere that the coach needs him to play. He has already played in several different midfield roles and just wants to be available to help the club find success in the La Liga while spending the year on loan.
“In my time on loan with Sporting I played more as a pivot, practically every match. Last year I was used in several positions such as a double pivot and a little more advanced. I can adapt well to any situation and I am available for whatever the coach needs. I’m a player who can journey forward and also able to go back in defense. I like to have the ball, play as a team, and try to control the game.”
Leganés Technical Secretary, Txema Indias, also praised the signing of Vesga. The club is excited to bring in another player from Lezama, highlighting the fact that Leganés and Athletic have a very good relationship. Indias mentioned that Vesga has proven that he can play in the Primera and hopes to see him in an important role while on loan.
“We could not miss out on bringing in an Athletic player during the transfer window. With the people at Lezama everything is generally easy and you can reach an agreement quickly. We must also thank Vesga because when he went on vacation we had a verbal agreement. Other clubs tried to change him mind, but he decided to come here. It shows what kind of person he is and we are delighted to have him because he can play in at least two positions. He’s grown a lot in Bilbao, and half a season in Gijon, and has proved his worth. We want him to continue his growth this year with Leganés.”
Mikel Vesga is expected to compete for a starting role at Leganés where he will be able to enjoy regular minutes in La Liga. Athletic still believe that the 25-year-old can become an important player at the San Mamés so this year will be vitally important for his future in Bilbao. Due to the loan agreement Vesga is not eligible to play in matches against Athletic, but the Lions will be watching him very closely throughout the year.
