Athletic Club Haven’t Given Up Hope Of Signing Ander Herrera
Athletic are in a really good place at the moment. With preseason training starting tomorrow the Lions have made four great signings and if the transfer window were to close right now it would definitely be considered a very successful summer. To be honest, the club is most likely finished signing players, but President Josu Urrutia has made it clear that anything can happen until the window closed at the end of August. That may have been a hint because Athletic are still hoping to sign one more footballer.
According to a report from Radio Marca Bilbao, Athletic have made it their main goal to try to sign Manchester United’s Ander Herrera. Although they know a deal is extremely unlikely, they won’t give up until the transfer window closes. The Lions believe that bringing back the 28-year-old would add immense quality to the team and give new manager Eduardo Berizzo another great player to work with.
Last month Athletic made a strong push to try to convince Herrera to come back to the San Mamés. They offered him a contract that would have seen him become the highest paid player in the squad, but he has been clear about the fact that he wants to see out the last year of his contract with Manchester United. Still, if he doesn’t feature in Jose Mourinho’s plans the English side could be willing to negotiate a transfer. Right now any deal for Herrera seems almost impossible, but Athletic will not give up hope.
Until this point both Atletico Madrid and AC Milan have been rivals for Herrera’s signature, but both seem to have fallen back a bit. Atletico have little money left to spend and Milan have been plagued by UEFA punishments. With Herrera entering the final year of his contract he will be free to sign elsewhere at the end of the season and, if it comes to that, Athletic will go all out on trying to bring him back. Ander Herrera is the main goal now and the hope is to reach a deal this summer, no matter how unlikely it may be.
