Rumors Claim Real Valladolid Are Interested In Signing Athletic Club’s Mikel Balenziaga
Mikel Balenziaga has been the starting left-back at Athletic since returning to the club in 2013, but his place in the team has now been brought into question after the signing of Yuri Berchiche. The fact that Athletic made Berchiche their second highest transfer signing in history shows just how important they view the 28-year-old which could spell disaster for Balenziaga’s future at the San Mamés. The rumor mill has started to turn.
According to rumors on social media, Real Valladolid are interested in signing Mikel Balenziaga who played for the Pucela from 2011-2013 before returning to Athletic. Valladolid will compete in the Primera next season and it would make sense that they would want to bring back a player that is familiar with the club and has La Liga experience. However, there have been no credible sources linking Balenziaga with a move back to Real Valladolid and at this point the story seems like nothing more than a rumor among fans.
Despite Athletic signing Berchiche it would still be surprising to see Balenziaga leave the club. There is always a chance that Cristian Ganea or Andoni López could take Balenziaga’s place if they perform well in the preseason, but the 30-year-old adds invaluable experience and depth to Eduardo Berizzo’s team. In fact, having a strong season could even see Balenziaga extend his contract and continue at the San Mamés as Berchiche’s backup, especially if Athletic qualifies for Europe this year. The link to Real Valladolid definitely makes sense and they may have even asked Athletic about his availability, but it is highly unlikely that Mikel Balenziaga will be leaving the San Mamés this summer.
