Mikel Vesga Joins Leganés On Loan For The 2018/2019 Season

Despite the fact that preseason training hasn’t begun yet, new Athletic manager Eduardo Berizzo has already been working hard to assess the team. The Argentine recently made the decision that Mikel Vesga will not feature in his plans for the upcoming season and the midfielder has been in talks with several teams about possible loan moves. It became clear that Vesga would leave before training begins on Monday and that has finally happened.

On Wednesday Athletic announced that Mikel Vesga has left to join Leganés on loan for the upcoming season. The deal does not allow Athletic to recall him during the winter and also prohibits the 25-year-old from featuring in games against the Lions. Athletic will be competing against Leganés in La Liga and potentially in the Copa del Rey.

Spending the year with Leganés will give Vesga the chance to be a starter in the Primera and fight for his future at Athletic Club. He is still under contract through 2021 and the Lions view him as a player who can become an important contributor in the future. For now the priority is for the 25-year-old to play regular minutes and Athletic believe that spending a year on loan with Leganés is the best decision for his career right now.
