Mikel Vesga Expected To Be Sent On Loan Before Preseason Training Begins On Monday
It has been a busy summer for Athletic Club and the month of July has barely begun. The Lions have already signed Cristian Ganea, Ander Capa, Dani García, and Yuri Berchiche which means that new manager Eduardo Berizzo will have a squad of 35 players when preseason begins on Monday. The Argentine will have to trim the team down in the coming weeks, but he has already made some decisions for the upcoming season.
Berizzo has made it clear that Mikel Vesga will not have a place in the team this season and the 25-year-old has been weighing up his options with several clubs in the Primera interested in signing him. Vesga is still under contract through 2021 and Athletic believe that he can be a player of the future so the important thing right now is to find regular minutes for him to continue developing and prove that he deserves a place at the San Mamés next year. As things stand right now he is expected to leave on loan before preseason training begins on Monday and there are a few clubs that are in the running.
According to a report from Juanma Velasco of Marca, newly promoted sides Rayo Vallecano and Huesca are both leading the race to sign Mikel Vesga. The two clubs have great relationships with Athletic and would be able to guarantee regular minutes for Vesga, possibly even starting roles. Leganés have also been major players in the race to sign the midfielder, while Getafe seem to be on the outside looking in. Athletic will take Vesga’s opinions into consideration, but the club will likely make the final decision.
Along with Vesga, it seems as though Mikel Rico could be leaving Athletic this summer. Huesca have been pushing to sign the 33-year-old who played for them nearly a decade ago, but Eduardo Berizzo has yet to make a decision regarding the situation. The Argentine will start truly assessing the team next week and is expected to trim the squad down to 23-25 players for the upcoming season. Many players will be battling for their places at the club this summer so every single training session and friendly match will be vitally important.
