Huesca Interested In Signing Athletic Club Defender Xabi Etxeita
Preseason training will begin in less than a week and Eduardo Berizzo will have to make some difficult decisions to trim the squad down from 35 players. Several names have already been linked with moves away from the San Mamés, such as Mikel Vesga, and clubs are monitoring the situation at Athletic closely. Now it seems as though someone unexpected is also being targeted.
According to a report from Javier Beltran of AS, newly promoted side Huesca are interested in signing Xabi Etxeita this summer. The club has identified the 30-year-old as someone who would immediately improve their squad and give the team an experienced player to help them compete in La Liga this season. Etxeita is still under contract through 2019 and has a release clause of €40 million.
There is no denying that Etxeita would be a great addition to a club like Huesca. He is experienced and can still be successful in the Primera, but the move really doesn’t make sense for Athletic. If the Lions were to lose Etxeita it would leave them with only three center-backs in the squad and no true backup behind Iñigo Martinez. Although someone like Mikel San José could play in defense, letting Etxeita leave wouldn’t benefit Athletic. At the same time, their decision to let Unai Bilbao and Óscar Gil leave for free this summer should also show that Etxeita is a part of Berizzo’s plans.
Athletic have built a strong relationship with Huesca who could sign a handful of players from the San Mamés this summer. The newly promoted club is hoping to bring back Alex Remiro and have also asked about midfielders Mikel Rico and Mikel Vesga. Adding in Etxeita, Huesca would love to get all four but Athletic and Eduardo Berizzo will be the ones to make the final decisions.
