Iker Undabarrena Signs With Tenerife After Leaving Bilbao Athletic
Iker Undabarrena has been a major point of discussion among Athletic fans for a few months now. Many expected the talented midfielder and captain of Bilbao Athletic to get the chance to train with the first team this summer, but that isn’t the case. Athletic had a clause in his contract that would have officially promoted him and extended his deal, but they chose not to trigger it. On Saturday his contract with Athletic expired and the 23-year-old already has a new home.
According to reports from Marca, among other sources, Iker Undabarrena has agreed to sign with Tenerife on a three-year deal. He will be joining manager Joseba Etxeberria, who is a living legend at Athletic, who was instrumental in convincing the midfielder to accept Tenerife’s offer despite several other clubs showing interest. He will now compete in the Segunda where he will be expected to challenge for a starting role in the team.
Undabarrena’s exit has caused a stir among fans who truly believed that he deserved the chance to compete for a place in the first team, especially after several midfielders had a poor season under Kuko Ziganda. However, the 23-year-old made it clear that he was only going to sign an extension if he was guaranteed promotion. For whatever reason the two sides agreed to part ways and Undabarrena now has a new home after joining Lezama in 2005 when he was just 10 years old. Perhaps he could return to the club some day in the future, but for now his time at Athletic has come to an end.
