Athletic Club Sign Yuri Berchiche For €24 Million
Yuri Berchiche will be an Athletic player. The left-back agreed to a four-year contract with the Basques about a week ago and the Lions have been in negotiations with PSG ever since. The French giants have been pressed to sell due to their need to raise €60 million by 30 June to be in compliance with Financial Fair Play. They have already raised roughly €36 million from other sales so offloading Berchiche was the last move they needed to make. After several days of talks the deal is finally done.
According to Le Parisien, and confirmed by other sources, Athletic Club and PSG have reached an agreement that will see the Basques pay €24 million, including bonuses, to sign Yuri Berchiche. In fact, the two clubs struck a deal for €20 million a few days ago but have since been negotiations the variables and add-ons that could now see it rise to the €24 million total. Now that the transfer is in place Athletic could announce the signing at any time and Berchiche is expected to be presented next week.
Berchiche returns to Athletic where he spent two years at Lezama and will now be one of the highest paid players in the squad. His signing also makes him the second-most expensive player in club history, right behind his good friend Iñigo Martinez who arrived in January after Athletic paid his €32 million release clause. The 28-year-old will provide quality, experience, and leadership on the left side of the defense and marks another massive signing for the Basque giants.
