Leganés Closing In On A Deal To Sign Athletic Midfielder Mikel Vesga On Loan
Mikel Vesga’s future at Athletic Club is in question. Despite recently signing a contract extension through 2021, the 25-year-old failed to play at a high level and hold down a regular place under Kuko Ziganda last season. He was coming off of a strong loan move with Sporting and looked ready to challenge for a starting role, but that just didn’t happen. Now it looks like he will be leaving once again with new manager Eduardo Berizzo not including him in his plans for the upcoming campaign.
Leganés have been chasing the midfielder for a few weeks now and finally look like they may secure the deal. According to a report from AS, Leganés are close to finalizing a loan move and are so optimistic that they believe they could sign Vesga within the coming days. The report goes on to say that Leganés should have no problems coming to an agreement with Athletic who are in favor of the move because Vesga would be able to feature as a starter while away.
Getafe, Alavés, and Sporting Gijon have all been following Vesga as well, but it looks like Leganés will be the ones to land the midfielder. The club have already been in contact with Vesga who is said to have a positive outlook on the move because he will be able to play regular minutes in the Primera and will get the opportunity to prove himself worthy of a place at the San Mamés next season. On the surface this move looks wonderful for everyone involved.
Leganés are also hoping to sign Sabin Merino on loan, although that deal would be much more difficult to secure. The forward is determined to fight for his place at Athletic this summer and wants to convince Eduardo Berizzo to keep him in the team. He will not even listen to offers from other clubs unless the manager tells him that he isn’t part of the plans moving forward. If that happens, Leganés could be in position to bring on both Athletic players for the upcoming season.
