Óscar Gil Still Weighing Up His Options After Leaving Bilbao Athletic
After spending a decade at Athletic Club, Óscar Gil is taking a new direction in his career. He joined Lezama in 2008 and was a vital part of Bilbao Athletic’s squad last season, but when the team failed to earn promotion it became clear that the center-back would be moving on. The club soon announced that they would allow his contract to expire and he is now looking for a new home. The 23-year-old recently sat down with El Desmarque Bizkaia to discuss his future and revealed that he has already received a few offers, but hasn’t made any decisions yet.
“I don’t know where I’ll be next year, but some teams have called me. I have some offers, but there isn’t anything concrete yet. Everyone wants to play at the highest level. If I could be in the Segunda I would love that. The time next week I will focus all my energy on deciding what I want for next season. It is difficult to leave after spending almost eleven years at Lezama and being there day after day with all of your friends. But you have to turn the page and look forward. Amorrortu communicated the club’s decision to me, but at my age I already saw it coming. Everyone already knows the situation they are in.”
It is always sad to see young players leave Athletic, but for Gil there just wasn’t a path to the first team and staying at Bilbao Athletic was not an option. Now other promising defenders will be looking to take his place. Iñigo Baqué and Javier Murua will have the chance to fight for starting roles in Gaizka Garitano’s team, while new signing Oier Luengo will also be expected to play an important role. Óscar Gil still has a long career ahead of him and maybe one day he can return to the San Mamés.
