Leganés Eyeing A Double Swoop For Athletic Club’s Sabin Merino And Mikel Vesga
Athletic Club will begin preseason training in exactly two weeks and that means that it is getting close to the time for Eduardo Berizzo to start making some difficult decisions. He will start the summer with 34 players and will be looking to trim that down to somewhere between 22-25. There are already a few players who have one foot out of the door and Leganés are looking at two of them in hopes of strengthening their own squad.
According to a recent report from AS, Leganés have their eyes set on Sabin Merino and Mikel Vesga whom they believe would be perfect additions to their team. Mauricio Pellegrino’s side is in need of more depth in attack and stability in midfield and have identified the two Athletic players are desired additions. Vesga is still under contract through 2021, while Merino in entering the final year of his deal and hopes to secure his future.
Vesga may be the easier move to pull off. He has reportedly already been told by Berizzo that he doesn’t have a place in the squad for the upcoming season and has been fielding offers to leave on loan. Leganés would likely be able to offer him a starting role where he can continue developing and will have the chance to prove that he deserves a place at Athletic next year. Leganés will be competing with other clubs such as Getafe and Alavés who are also interested in the 25-year-old.
Signing Sabin Merino will be more difficult. The 26-year-old has his mind made up that he wants to stay at Athletic and is ready to fight for his place this summer. He hopes to prove to Berizzo that he can still contribute to the team so his exit isn’t a certainty. In fact, he isn’t even interested in hearing from other clubs and will not entertain offers until Berizzo makes a decision. Playing for Leganés would allow the forward to play regular minutes, but his heart is still set on staying at the San Mamés.
