Remiro “Playing At Athletic Would Be A Dream, If Not I Hope To Return To Huesca”

Alex Remiro

Alex Remiro is still waiting for a renewal offer from Athletic Club (Play Segunda)

Alex Remiro is one of the most promising young goalkeepers in Spanish football and could be a real star in La Liga. He spent last year on loan with Huesca and stood out as the best player at his position in the league and helped the club earn promotion to the Primera for the first time in history. Now he’s ready to compete in the first division.

In a recent interview with Play Segunda, Remiro made it clear that he doesn’t want to be a backup next season. He definitely still loves his boyhood club, but Athletic are going to have to work quickly if they want to keep him at the club.

“I hope that I can return to Huesca. I have enjoyed this year, it has been the best of my career. To return to Athletic and play would be a dream because they have been my team since I was a kid. Right now I am at the expense of what they want to do with me and I want to prove that I can compete with anyone. I don’t want to be a substitute and I want to show that I have the qualities to be successful if someone will give me the opportunity. If thats at Huesca, great, and if its at Athletic it would be a dream.”

Remiro is entering the last year of his contract and hasn’t been offered a renewal since December. That specific offer did not entice the goalkeeper who has since been waiting on a new deal to be put on the table. He’s said in the past that he would sign a renewal if it also gave him the chance to leave on loan and keep playing as a starter, which is what Athletic would also like to do. His future could now be decided in the next month or so.

New manager Eduardo Berizzo has already called on Remiro to spend the preseason training with the first team. The Argentine will assess the goalkeeper and, most likely, will be the one to make a decision on his future before the club make him a new offer. There is no denying his talent and the fact that Athletic want to extend his current contract, but the longer they wait the more dangerous it will be. Remiro has proven that he is ready for the top flight so Athletic must convince him that he has a future at the San Mamés for a deal to be reached.
