Athletic Club Reject Iago Herrerín’s Request To Leave On Loan
Iago Herrerín caused a stir last month when he said openly in an interview that he does not want to sit behind Kepa Arrizabalaga again next season and that he wants to be at a club where he can be a starter. He admitted that he wanted to meet with Athletic to discuss his future, but made it clear that he understood the fact that he was still under contract after having signed a renewal through 2021. That meeting seems to have already taken place with a decision being made.
According to a report from Javier Ortiz De Lazcano of El Correo, Iago Herrerín recently met with Athletic and requested to be sent on loan this summer. The club responded by rejecting his request with new manager Eduardo Berizzo wanting him to remain as the backup for the upcoming season. The Lions would not have an experienced option behind Kepa if Herrerín left and that has played a big role in the decision.
For now it appears as though the issue is settled, but Herrerín could always continue asking and try to convince Berizzo to let him leave. Without a viable option to replace the 30-year-old it is unlikely that the Argentine manager would give in to his request. In the meantime, Athletic are still working on renewals for Alex Remiro and Unai Simón who look to be possible stars of the future and are expected to leave on loan this summer in order to continue playing regular minutes. The club is prioritizing their development and has no plans to make either a backup to Kepa this season.
