Unai López Expected To Sign Contract Renewal In The Coming Days
Unai López is finally starting to live up to the massive potential he has had since joining Lezama back in 2011. The 22-year-old spent last season on loan with Rayo Vallecano where he stood out as one of the best midfielders in the Segunda and helped lead the club to a first place finish and promotion to La Liga. Now it looks as though his future at Athletic Club is decided.
A few weeks ago it was reported that new manager Eduardo Berizzo has already spoken with López and told him that he is counting on him for the upcoming season. In response, the midfielder began renewal discussions with Athletic with both parties believing that a deal would be reached quickly and easily. López wants to stay at Athletic and has done everything needed to make that dream a reality.
On Thursday, Javier Ortiz De Lazcano of El Correo reported that López is one step away from signing his renewal and that the 22-year-old could put pen to paper within the next few days. Sources say that his new contract will be for four years and will give him the chance to fight for a regular place at the club. After disappointing performances from all of Athletic’s midfielders last season, there is belief that López could be the answer to the problem.
There will be plenty of competition in the midfield this summer with López returning and the signing of Dani García. Athletic are also still pursuing Newcastle’s Mikel Merino. Players like Beñat, Ander Iturraspe, Mikel San José, and Mikel Rico will have to fight for their place with Berizzo looking to make major changes to get Athletic back on the winning track. Regardless of what happens this summer, it appears as though Unai López has proven that he has a future at Athletic Club.
