Gorka Guruzeta Begins Training After Undergoing Hernia Surgery
Gorka Guruzeta was one of the most outstanding players for Bilbao Athletic last year, leading the reserve team in scoring with 18 goals. His campaign became even more impressive when it was revealed that he was playing while hampered by a sports hernia which needed to be surgery repaired. The striker underwent the operation on 2 June and is finally back on the field as part of his recovery.
On Wednesday the 21-year-old published pictures on social media of himself training at Lezama with the caption “First day on the ball. Very happy and very good sensations. More eager than ever!”. Athletic Club players will report back to Lezama on 9 July to begin preseason training and Guruzeta is expected to be fully fit and ready to join his teammates at that time.
Guruzeta will have the chance this summer to fight for a place in the first team behind Aritz Aduriz, but he will have stiff competition. Sabin Merino, Asier Villalibre, and Iñigo Vicente will all be fighting for their places as well and there won’t be room for everyone. If the striker can’t convince new manager Eduardo Berizzo he will likely be sent on loan to the Segunda where clubs like Real Zaragoza have already made their interest known. Whatever happens this summer, Guruzeta possesses plenty of potential and quality and he looks to have a bright future at the San Mamés.
