Getafe In Talks To Sign Athletic Club Midfielder Mikel Vesga
When Eduardo Berizzo begins preseason training on 9 July he will have 33 players at his disposal and far too many midfielders. There is an overbooking at the position and that means that some players will be on the way out. So far Mikel Rico and Mikel Vesga have been the names most associated with an exit and one of them is closer than ever to leaving the San Mamés.
According to a report from Alfonso Herran of AS, Getafe have already reached out to Athletic in hopes of signing Mikel Vesga during this summer’s transfer window. The 25-year-old began last season as a starter in Kuko Ziganda’s system but struggled and was relegated to the bench throughout the second half of the campaign. He still has a contract through 2021 and Athletic are looking to send him out on loan where he will be able to play regular minutes. It should be noted that Vesga has also received interest from Alavés and Sporting Gijon.
Getafe’s interest isn’t surprising at all considering the fact that their new Sporting Director, Nico Rodríguez, played a big role in helping Sporting sign Vesga on loan back in 2017. During that spell the midfielder played at a very high level and looked to be on his way to solidifying his place in the Athletic Club squad. The 25-year-old has shown signs that he can be a special player, but for whatever reason he just hasn’t been able to put it all together at the San Mamés. With too many players in front of him in the pecking order, a loan move definitely makes sense and Vesga is hoping to stay in the Primera in order to prove himself.
