Athletic Club Considering A Move To Bring Back Striker Guillermo
Athletic Club know that they are in need of more firepower up front and an eventual successor to Aritz Aduriz. There aren’t many options available outside of the club and many believe that the answer will come from Lezama with players like Gorka Guruzeta making waves. However, the club have turned an eye to a familiar face who may be in line to make a return to the San Mamés this summer.
According to a report from Nika Cuenca of Fiebre Rojiblanca, Athletic have been scouting Numancia striker Guillermo and are entertaining the idea of bringing him back to the club. Scouts have already attended several of his games this season and were in attendance for the first leg of Numancia’s promotional playoff tie against Real Valladolid. Cuenca also says that representatives will likely take in the second leg as José María Amorrortu continues to compile an extensive report on the striker before making any decisions. The Lions currently have an option to buy him back for a fee of €800,000 but this is the last year that the clause will be in place.
After leaving Athletic in 2015 Guillermo has slowly continued to develop as a player, until this year when he seems to have turned a major corner. So far he has scored eight league goals for Numancia and two against Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey for a total of ten. He has been one of the standout players in the Segunda in the second half of the season and is now starting to live up to the potential that he showed while playing for Bilbao Athletic. Interestingly, if Guillermo is brought back it would spell trouble for the future of Sabin Merino who is determined to fight for his place in the team this summer.
Guillermo was born and raised in Bilbao and joined Lezama in 2003 when he was just ten years old. He rose through the ranks of the youth system and really began to make a name for himself while playing with Bilbao Athletic. He made his first team debut on 9 November, 2013 in a 2-1 win over Levante at the San Mamés. Although he was never able to carve out a solid place in the team, Athletic interest in bringing him back shows that he has started to turn heads. Cuenca says that the 25-year-old would love to return to Athletic, but so far there has been no contact with Numancia regarding a possible deal.
