Signing Yuri Berchiche Will Cost Athletic Club At Least €20 Million

Will Yuri Berchiche be available this summer? (PSG)

Yuri Berchiche remains one of Athletic Club’s top transfer targets this summer, although the Lions know that he won’t be easy to sign. Despite having Mikel Balenziaga, Cristian Ganea, and Andoni López all competing for the left-back spot, Berchiche is on another level and it only makes sense that Athletic would try to bring him to the San Mamés. Initial talks with PSG revealed a €30 million price tag, but that number may have actually gone down.

According to a report from Javier Beltran of ASYuri Berchiche could possibly be signed for a fee between €20-€25 million, but it won’t be that simple. Sources in France have said that new manager Thomas Tuchel has already decided that he wants to sell all of his fullbacks, but all signs still point to Berchiche beginning the preseason with PSG. The 28-year-old is happy with life in Paris and has no plans to ask the club for a transfer which further complicates the situation.

PSG hold all the cards when it comes to this possible transfer. Berchiche is happy in France, the club has no need to sell, and there are no release clauses in Ligue 1 which means there isn’t a standard upon which to start negotiations. The Parisians have the freedom to value Berchiche at whatever fee they want to and interested clubs will have to accept that fact. The only real issue at this point is that PSG are trying to meet the demands of Financial Fair Play which could mean they will lose some players, but that decision is up to them.

For now Athletic seem content to wait until preseason begins before approaching PSG with another offer. Tuchel will be assessing his squad soon and that may be the best time to pick back up negotiations. However, the Lions will have to be careful as Atletico Madrid are also watching the left-back closely. At the end of the day it still looks very difficult for Athletic to pull off the signing, but they have not given up hope that they can bring Yuri Berchiche to the San Mamés.
