Athletic Club’s midfield was extremely disappointing last season and is in need of an overhaul. So far the Lions have signed Eibar captain Dani García and plan to keep Unai López in the team after a successful year on loan with Rayo Vallecano. At the same time, there are now too many midfielders in the squad and new manager Eduardo Berizzo is going to have to sort out who will stay and who will leave. There now seems to be some clarity on at least one player.

According to a report from Javier Ortiz De Lazcano of El Correo, Athletic have informed Mikel Vesga that he will not feature in Eduardo Berizzo’s plans for the upcoming season and that he should find a club to join on loan if he is to play valuable minutes. His representatives are currently fielding offers from Primera teams in order to make the best decision for his career.

As of right now both Leganés and Alavés have shown interest in signing the 25-year-old. Both clubs are looking to strengthen the midfield and believe that Vesga could provide just what they are looking for in their systems. He will be hoping to join a team that can guarantee him regular playing time so that will certainly be a deciding factor in the situation. He also has received offers from some clubs in the Segunda, but his goal is to stay in the top flight.

Mikel Vesga’s Athletic Club career is not over by any means. He still has a contract through 2021 and will be hoping to prove himself while away on loan so that he can come back to the San Mamés next year. That being said, he will need to have a strong campaign to convince the club due to the fact that he will have plenty of competition within the squad. Athletic’s desire to send him on loan instead of selling him shows that they still have hope for him, but it will be up to Vesga to repay that faith and prove he deserves a place in the team.
